Our class theme this term is Mystical lands and Creatures
Year 1 will enter the magical world of fairytales. We will have a whistle stop tour of traditional fairytales for the children to capture the skills and delights of storytelling, and understand the key elements in the stories. The first of these will be an enchanting story about twelve dancing princesses who sneak out their bedroom to dance the night away. They will develop imaginative language for the description of people and places in stories. During our D.T learning the children will become designers, creating magnificent castles fit for any fairytale land.
In Science we will be exploring the properties and purposes for different materials.
In the run up to Easter we will be undertaking ‘Great Egg Race’ challenges which will give us lots of opportunities to apply our science knowledge and understanding as well as our mathematics skills to a design technology challenge.
The values we are focusing on this term are Independence and Hospitality
We want everyone at St Thomas’ CE Primary School to have the confidence and ability to make informed choices about their learning and to recognise they are responsible for organising themselves (equipment, home-learning). We want everyone to have a go and never give up (resilience). Children will be encouraged to take an active part in their own learning and be able to discuss their preferences with both their peers and adults. We want children to love their learning, to seek out new knowledge for themselves and recognise when they are genuinely stuck and how to seek the help they need.
The Christian value we will focus on is hospitality so we will be considering the following ideas in our class:
This half term children in Year One will be working on the following objectives in the core subjects:
The Princess did not sleep because the bed was uncomfortable.
The thunder crashed and the trees creaked.
The storm continued but the Princess kept going.
E.g. The king called his daughters. Who took the beautiful shoes?
